Tottenham based Andrei Santa showed grit determination and heart to climb from the floor to beat Nabil Ahmed 38-37 on referee Mark Bates’ scorecard after four enthralling rounds at the Budgen Boxing in association with Goodwin Boxing’s latest night in the fight night series.
Santa started brightly but there was no doubt this was a night journeyman Ahmed had decided to come to win. The pair exchanged blow after blow during the first two rounds which referee Bates scored both to Santa, but they were close. However, the big shock happened in round 3 when Ahmed launched a fierce combination dropping Santa to the canvas. After taking an 8 count Santa resumed going on the offensive and finished the round strongly. Round 4 and they both wanted the fight. It was to and fro, but no doubt that the round was Santa’s.
Santa now moves on with a 3-1 record aiming for a title shot this year, but his loyal fans will not want a repeat of the palpitations they suffered on a cold Saturday night in Bethnal Green.
Another boxer originally from Rumania (now based in London at Stonebridge Boxing Club), Andrei “The boom” Dascalu stepped up to 6 rounds for the first time taking on Bulgarian Julian Lilyanov. Lilyanov came into the contest with a 1-2 record never having been stopped or put on the canvas. However, it tool Dascalu only 1 minutes and 51 seconds of the first round before referee Kieran McCann was forced to step in to save Lilyanov. A correct stoppage at the right time observers at ringside thought.
Elsewhere on the card 30 year old Sher Khan moved to 3-0 with a comprehensive 40-36 shut out win against Lee Hallett on McCanns card. Khan had to come up two weight divisions to take out a last minute change of opponent and credited himself very well and now moves on to another contest on 17 June at the same venue.
Harry Webb is progressing nicely and ran out a 40-36 winner moving to 8-1. Manages Steve Goodwin commented this was the best performance of Harry’s career so far. “Harry showed composure and class shaking off some ring rust. We will be building Harry into title contention”. Harry is back in the ring of 1st April on the Jack Green promoted “Ultimate Glory” show in Plymouth.
Frankie Storey trained and managed by Tony Pill oozed class in a runaway 6 round win over the ultra tough Jake Pollard. Storey has another engagement later this month on 25th when he boxes on his own managers promotion in Kentish Town.
The Alec Wilkey trained Dean Gardner put behind him a loss to Jordan Grannum in his last fight stopping the usually very durable Justin Menzie in round 3 of the scheduled 4 round contest. An excellent performance from the Sutton based fighter.
An enjoyable and exciting night of boxing for the crowd which had a bit of everything.
